I have just retrieved a 308778 cam from a Vitesse Mk2 engine I have spare with the intention of upgrading my post KE 10000 GT6 Mk3 engine to this earlier
and more desirable cam. Upon cleaning I have spotted two areas of concern on individual lobes.
Photo 1 shows what looks like a casting flaw on the exhaust lobe for No3 cylinder.
Can anyone give me an appraisal on this. Is it scrap? Will it knacker the new follower? Any other issues that may arise?
I will post the other photo after this question.

This is the other lobe with a flaw right on top of the cam inlet for No6

Yes its scrap - ok for recon only - not only will you wreck a new set of followers you also stand the chance of wrecking the bottom end as if the
lodes break up then it will deposit particals into the oil - the cam and followers wear and harden together so its the same as putting old
followers on a new cam - reciepe for disaster - it will also knock like a worn small end under hard acceleration - so in a word I would not use
it
If you are a tight budget the only way you could use the cam is to use the original followers that were with it in the original engine - so that
each follower is in its original position - i.e number 1 follower on number 1 lobe etc etc but unless you numbered them when you took them out then
forget it - again I would not advise this but you could at least see what the cam goes like - cut your losses and fit a new chilled cast blank TR6
35 - 65 profile instead - much better than the Vitesse/GT6 mk 11 cam

I would say (depending on the depth of the flaw) that the cam could be re-ground to a satifactory level, but then you may as well use a new one
(price dependant). Theres definately plenty of 'meat' left on it for that.
But I agree with Mark that it shouldn't be used in that condition... that's a recipie for disaster...

if this cam came in to us as an exchange it would go straight in the scrap bin to repro this cam you may well loose to much of the base
circle its now cheeper in the long run to fit the new .cams with all the original amount of lobe on them when ground even to full race
profiles regards mark
