Size 5.20/13 off some old Herald rims I just picked up. They look in reasonable condition but I'm going to paint the rims and have radials. Plenty of tread on them, if anyone on here likes driving on crossplies just because they're "original", come and get 'em!If they've not gone in a couple of weeks I'll have to get rid as I need the space.

The guy in the tyre depot (who took them off the rims for me) had never seen crossplies before!

Generous offer, but they should be binned.
Tyres are not only consumables, they have a shelf life.
The usual advice is six years. See: http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html

After that the perfromance of the rubber deteriorates, becomes unpredictable.
The rubber may be brittle, wear quickly and could break up.

These are ....... goodness me, how long is it since crossplys went out?

If you want stored tyres to last as long as poss, keep them in the dark.
Light is a tyres worst enemy, and I very much doubt if these have been dark stored.

  Or if you are a gardener, stack them and grow tomatoes in them! There are some intriguing and useful alternative uses for old tyre carcases!

    Wouldn't use them myself, but there are bound to be a few nutters out there that would..? I dunno, someone might want them for a museum piece? They seem to have been stored pretty well in the dark so they may be OK if you were dull enough?

      I've been at 2 shows recently, and some of the tyres I saw on cars and vans were absolutely shocking, BUT, they were on vehicles that were trailered to the shows, so maybe someone has a use for them.

        Exactly my point. As an aside, something I've seen at a few events is really quite nice cars-not necessarily older than "our" cars-painstakingly restored except for the obviously original wiring looms that are quite patently asking for trouble. Frayed, brittle and cracked insulation, dodgy connections, you name it-every electrical nightmare is on display just waiting to cause a catastrophic fire. I'm not saying original wiring in itself is a problem, some of it seems to last well, but when all the previously mentioned problems are plainly visible you'd have to be a bit soft in the head not to replace it especially having spent Â£Â£Â£Â£Â£Â£Â£'s on everything else.
