is this the same on a spitfire mk2 or 3?
I have a hole gear box if anyone wants it, it is free but will need collecting from NW6 London.

As far as I am aware I think the right angle drive is the same on all "our" cars with overdrive. I'd certainly expect the same one to be used
on all D types, and the saem one on all J types. Whether the same one is used on both D types and J types I'm not sure, but I think it is. I've
certainly never seen them advertised (new or used) with any distinction as to which type of overdrive they fit.
Looking further afield, was a right angle drive used in the 2000/2.5 saloon, Dolomite and TR type gearboxes when overdrive fitted? Are those
suitable?

Canleys usually have them in stock.
They are repro items and they seem to be the weak link in the system.
I bought my second one from them only last month.

I think the same angle drive was used on D type and J type, some (but not all) overdrive big saloons, presumably all overdrive
dolomites, and BL 2200 wedges, although possibly just the autos. This isn't a lot of help as they are not as plentiful in scrapyards as
they were 10-15 years ago.

And there isn't much chance of anyone having a 'spare' as they are so unreliable!!!
Your best bet will be Ebay I suspect.
Or a new one from Canleys or whereever.
Make triple sure the cable and speedo head are good as you would not want to kill the new one.
Cheers

Old ones are far more reliable than new ones. The bottom caps can fall out of the new ones because they're not properly staked
in. The cog and pin from the gear box then falls out onto the road.
You haven't said what's actually broken but if the pin from the gear box is no longer driving the ring it sits in, or it slips
under load, this can actually be repaired with a bit of solder, and a big soldering iron.

What Norman is looking for is, an angle drive:
It is an ally casting with brass insert and sprungsquare drive and has a thread on one end and at 90 degrees a swivel nut that screws on to the gear
box output.
So your cable comes from the speedo inside the cowl down by the side of g/box and when the 90deg adaptor is screwed on the end it allows the fitting to
gearbox without bending.
