Don't forget this coming Sunday (St Georges day) is the day we've been asked to get our classics out on the road and on show, even if it's only sat on the drive as a non-runner.

I'm going to Brooklands in mine for the STAB day, anyone else going?

I will be making the journey down from Suffolk, a good test for my rebuilt diff

Isn't it a bit worrying to be told that we need this day?
How many classic cars live their remaining lives in a heated, carpeted garage?
Almighty respect for anyone who is a daily driver, and my impression is that in Triumph the majority get out in their cars frequently, to Brooklands or wherever. Who needs a special day?
So how many museum pieces/trailer queens are there?

John, Everyone has their reason for owning and driving their classics so don't knock them. I'm one of the infrequent drivers who uses the Triumph when it suits me, it's my hobby not a neccessity. I have a company car I use for everyday use and I don't think my Herald would be suited to the miles I knock up every week! The fact that many drivers like me keep these cars for fine weathwer etc means they'll remain in good working order for many years. My car is far from pristine and using it every day would probably only make it's road-worthy days much shorter. I consider myself very lucky to have the luxury of a classic I can choose when I drive depending on mood, weather, or whatever.

Roy, I'll not be going to Brooklands unfortunately but I will be out in the Triumph; barring disasters of course, eg a few clouds overhead, e few spots of rain, the wind blowing the wrong direction, etc

I'm with Steve on this one, I love driving my GT6 and I also love the fact that I choose when to do this. It would be nice to have it as a daily driver but as Steve pointed out, it would shorten its life considerably. You also have to bear in mind the fact that it would probably be disastrous to my career if it was to have a few "bad days" and I ended up being late for work or not being able to get there at all.
Also, we have to think of the owners of really old classics, nearing vintage cars, these would be very impractical to use daily as lots of them simply can't keep up with modern motoring speeds. I had to take a 1964 Mini 850 on a 100 mile round trip a few weeks ago and it was a nightmare, the car ran well but after a short while I decided to keep it down to 50-55 MPH because the poor car was struggling.
My respect to you if you use your classic daily, hope everything goes well for you.
Mine will be sat on the drive this Sunday as the MOT is not booked until Wednesday, then it will be taxed and run regularly throughout the Summer.

My Vitesse is for high days, holidays and race days. I don't drive it every day, and as I said, I admire those who can achieve the reliability that driving their classic every day requires. And Triumph people do use their cars as often as possible, like you do.
So why do we need to be told to get out there and drive it - what's the reason behind it?

I know of classics that are garage museum pieces. It's a pity their owners look on them as such and do not see that using them is the reason for having them. But IMHO they are few - so if the majority do get out and rive when they can, why a special day?
Is the FBHVC trying to make a political point?

I'll enjoy doing as I am I bid, if I can get the rear axle refitted, but I would like to know - why?

FBHVC, do they know something we don't? Is the Government going to bring in more legislation to stop people enjoying a reasonably harmless hobby.
The answer is obvious, get in your classic and drive to Whitehall....we'll show 'em

I haven't read the article for some time but I think FBHVC were simply trying to raise the profile of classics both to government officials and the general public, the more we increase awareness of classic motoring then more cars are likely to be saved from the scrap yard and the more support we'll get in any kind of debate.

Anyway, even if all it achieves is to encourage a few more cars out for public viewing or people to get on with their restorations then it can't be a bad thing can it?
