Duxford Spitfire Day - Sunday 13th August

Just a quick reminder about the Duxford Spitfire Day - Sunday 13th August

The Spitfire Day is being organized by Duxford in conjunction with the Spitfire Society to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the first flight of the Supermarine Spitfire, and its entry into frontline service with the Royal Airforce. Duxford Airfield is itself an important part of the Spitfire story being the first airfield to operate the Spitfire, with No 19 Squadron, as well as being a front line RAF fighter station during the Battle of Britain.

There will be regular flying displays during the day. Duxford have advised us that all the Spitfires based at Duxford will be flying, and there will be a number of other Spitfires flying in for the day.

As organisers of the Duxford All Triumph Day, tthe Herts and Beds area of the TSSC were asked to organise a display of 50 Triumph Spitfires to help celebrate the anniversary. We were given an allocation of tickets that were sent out to people that responded to an earlier message on this message board and other club message boards - regardless of what club membership the applicant had - they went to Triumph Spitfire owners who were prepared to display their cars.

Our entire allocation of free tickets has now been sent out and I have a waiting list of people who still want to join the display. If you are one of the lucky recipients of a ticket, and are unable to attend, please contact me ASAP to arrange its return, or pass it on to another SPITFIRE owner who is able to attend.

If anyone else wants to come along and enjoy the display of Triumph Spitfires, with the background noise of Supermarine ones, then I'm sorry but you'll have to come in the Public Entrance and pay normal admission prices - please don't let this put you off, Duxford is a fantastic museum, and Spitfire Day will be a day to remember.

Also, don't forget the Duxford All Triumph Day on Sunday 17th September, when any Triumph (or other Classic car) is welcome to join the show.

For anyone that looks at the Duxford website, there is another Spitfire show in early September - unfortunately the early September show is only for the Supermarine Spitfires

  Properties of certain refractive index enhancers , according to my sources, will not be excercising their properties which vastly increases surface tension of other compounds on Sunday the 13th of August within (and without) the confines of Duxford........ (which I think you'll find is a good omission on said occasion)

          ok, you're all a bit wrong (apart from Kevin - no surprise there then!)

          'refractive index' is a the physical quality of a surface which lets light bounce off it or travel through it, the angle at which it changes from bouncing of it to travelling through it denotes the refractive index (in rough terms, deflected angles come into it when it travels through it). Therefor refractive index enhancers in this case means 'car polish' (cars will have been polished and shiny).
          
          Polish's have the ability to increase the surface tension of water (beading effect), water is a compound (and this won't be happening).
          
          so in short, polish on the shiny Triumph Spitfires won't be beading water as the BBC long(ish) weather forcast says it won't rain (inside and outside of Duxford). Which is a good thing for Sunday the 13th Aug.

              I take from the lack of a personal invite to be in the front row that my extremely historic banana isn't on the front row, I'll have you know that the americans played a very important part in the war and were very keen to melt down all the metal they have for the war effort, as a direct consequence some of that same war metal was destined for the war effort was used by a brave band of war people to forge a solid disc of aluminium, which we now know to have been machined into a circle with a 't' shape in the middle and then chromed to within an inch of it's life. This historic piece is now adorning the column end of my banana as a tribute to those brave folk..... (who later became chevy hot rodders?!?)
              
              (does that get me in the front row? huh? does it?)

  I've just received a last minute cancellation - some poor Spitfire owner, who shall remain nameless, has just been told that he must work on Sunday has just returned his ticket. He's gutted

      The bbc weather page is currently indicating that Duxford is on the cusp of clear and occasional showers.....
      
      I'm sure it'll be fine
      
      but it ain't over 'till the fat lady blings! (fat lady = banana, go figure....)
