From the 1300, 1500, front or rear wheel drive, to the Toledo, Dolomite and Sprint - chat about it here!
If you remember my thread on heavy steering on a Dolly 1500HL, well I have changed the upper (very worn) and lower balls joints and fitted new tyres on the
front. Now I have steering almost as good and light as my Herald!
When I took the car for new tyres I asked them to check the tracking, which they did and it was a long way out (toe out). When I asked them to adjust it,
they put a pair of mole grips on the rods, tried to undo the nuts and they said it was seized and the could not adjust it and would not attempt to free
it!
This was on thursday afternoon, there were 6 'mechanic' in the shop, and no other cars in the workshop! The car has had new track rod ends fitted in the
last 18 months so the nuts were tight but not seized.... Very strange attitude, basically no interest in working on an old car (even had to tell them what
the spec for the tracking was..). So if you are ever in Cambridge DONT ever go to Arbury quick fit (on Histon road). cheap tyres but crap mechanics...
This weekend I had a go at undoing the nuts of the rack, 2 mins of soaking in "Plusgas" and they have come undone with very little effort! For the moment I
have adjusted them a couple of turns each side to bring the wheels back to parellel (sp?). Certainly the steering feels better, more centreing and less
wander...But my problem is how can I adjust them properly without going to another tyre shed. There must be a way to do it at home but how? Any ideas?
BTW should be at Stoneleigh tomorrow, look out for a 70's brown 1977 Dolly 1500HL with O/D and rather badly painted wheels but with a good body. Possibly
with daughter and boyfreind in the back of the car, we brought the car for my daughter. Once she has learnt to drive it will be her car (with dad paying
for the running costs....). Good to get them started in Triumphs early
