Hello All
While on holiday last week the engine for my Dolomite 1850 has suffered some terminal damage, and now needs to be replaced. My 4-speed gearbox has lost the
use of sychromesh on 2nd, so it makes sence to replace that at the same time. One of the options Im considering is fitting a TR7 engine and an overdrive
gearbox to my 1850.
Although I would love to have a 5-speed box in my 1850, I'm minded to fit an 1850 overdrive unit as I understand fitting a TR7 gearbox to an 1850 requires
modifications to the gearbox tunnel, rear subframe, gearbox mountings and a custom propshaft.
Can someone please list the modifications that would be required to fit a TR7 engine in an 1850? I would be passing this information on to my garage for
them to quote for the work so I want to make sure I have got it right.
So far all I can come up with is:
- Modified engine backplate
- Modified sump
-Modified heater hoses and pipes
Anything else required?
Thanks
Chris
PS Why does the TSSC site say that the TR7 has 92 BHP compared to the Dolomite 1850 at 95 BHP. Surely this cannot be right.

Use the 1850 dolomite engine backplate flywheel and clutch, (clutch is just strong enough to handle an 8 valve 2 ltr engine) onto the 1850 gearbox, if
you usea sprint gearbox its the much larger 2000 type unit and will require all the before mentioned parts off a sprint The 5 speed(LT77) is not a
straight fit and will require tunnel mods and a custom gearbox crossmember as well as a custom prop however the 5 speed is a much stronger box (im
putting 300+ bhp through mine) with a much faster shift
The sump will need to be 1850 as will the oil pickup. the radiator should be ok if its fairly recent thats bout it
If you need an 8 valve engine (5 spd backplate) i have a good one sat in the garage which was removed for the v8 conversion.
email me if need any more info on tssctr7@aol.com

Tr7 reg
p.s you are right the figures quoted are wrong, they vary from 105-109bhp depending where you look for the 8v 2ltr engine

forgot to mention use 1850 engine mounts and dipstick, also an electric fan may be preferable.
the 1850 uses the same crank as the 2ltr, the block os just a bored out version of the 1850

Thanks for those suggestions Hugh. Mark at Jigsaw racing has suggested very simmilar reccomendations.
I need to get a few other quotes but I'm hoping to place an order for the TR7 engine this week.
Does anyone know what sort of performance increase that I should expect to find when I replace my 1850 unit with a Stage 1 fast road TR7
engine?
Thanks
Chris
