my dolly 1850 is now a pig to start, when it does fire up it miss fires on number 3 & 4 cylinders, the inlet manifold floods with petrol and it bubbles
(if thats the right word out). of the exhaust manifold,it also produces a frost around the rubber mount area on the carb. once it has warmed up the
missfire stops, but still revs rather high.anyone got any ideas to whats wrong?.these are su and just had new mounts but not gaskets.thanks Daryl. p.s up
untill 2 weeks ago i was running on strombergs when i started having problems, fitted electronic ignition and reset timing, but still woud'nt run right
unless the mixture was turned up to rich, then it would'nt start at all. had a set of su carbs in garage and decided to fit them thinking its a carb
problem, but to no avail.i might be looking down the wrong lines and it could it be valves?.any ideas?Daryl

Don't really know where to start with this!
Excess fuel suggests the rear carb is flooding, and if the carb hasn't been used for a bit that is quite possible. However the frost around the inlet
manifold might also suggest an air leak (likely if you have not replaced the gaskets) and this would explain an inability to get the idle speed down.
Also possible the rubber mounts have a crack or split which could cause and air leak, and this might be the cause of the original need to richen the
mixture.
Unless the SUs have needles and air valve springs designed to match the 1850 engine, you are likely to have problems getting the mixture right across
the whole rev range.
The only thing likely to cause a rapid failure of a Stromberg carb is a torn or split diaphragm, something easily replaced.

thanks chris, just ordered some new gaskets, but in the mean time i have used some sealant around the old ones,to no avail, the rubber mounts are new
and i have swapped them over in case theres a fault with one, again no change.the carbs came of a dolly 1850 that was running fine about 6 months
ago even with split rubber mounts, which no leads me to suspect valves or even a cracked head,it did'nt overheat when running, but there is also a
fair bit of oil around the back of the head,so off it will come unless i find out different.also when i took the rocker cover off, there was oil in
the head, but the inside cover was dry as a bone ?.thanks Daryl

Worth doing a compression test before removing the head, may shed some light on the problem and if it shows up anything at least you will know
what you are letting yourself in for.
