get asked often what the BHP of the car is, never give it much thoght, enjoying the fantasti pickup from standing still, dont go over 70. But get aske a
lot, I know the more you upgrade items on the car the better it gets lighter flyweel, better cam, better Induction, tuned carbs ect..
but can anyone tell me what my BHP is or roughly what it would be so I can anwer those who ask. its 2L mk1 vitesse engine, recored rad always 80degress
runing temp, electronic ignition, best HT leads and stainless exhaust are the only not origional bits on it that come to mind.
Other things I could / would buy but not fussed is stainless manafold, spin on oil filter, oil cooler and replace metal fan for plastic one as metal one
has tip mising of one blade and odly has all the ends bent about 2 inches from tip. but which one will make it better and whys it worth doing?
Oh and thankyou TSSC shop the leads and electronic ignition have it running fantasticly, feals like it want to go faster all the time instead of horible
lumpy hesitation.

If it is a standard Mk1 Vitesse 2 litre, then, as any of the standard reference works or manuals will tell you, the BHP is 95. However you are unlikely
to be producing that these days, not least because 5 star fuel is no longer available so you will be running less ignition advance (or suffering
pinking which also robs power).
Also, that 95bhp is almost certainly quoted as an SAE figure. The standard used these days is DIN (rather a fairer measure) against which a Vitesse
will be perhaps 85-90bhp. (The "150bhp" TR6 was actually 142bhp DIN, and the "132bhp" 2.5PI about 124BHP DIN. The 70bhp Vitesse 6 I have seen quoted as
64bhp DIN). Different exhaust arangements, cooling arrangements etc cater for the difference, the SAE figure being on a test bench, usually WITHOUT
ancillaries, the DIN figure being with all ancillaries as fully as installed in the car.
However, unless you regularly run up to 5000rpm (not necessary to make good progress on the road but can make a nice noise in a tunnel with the window
down!) you are more likely to be making use of the 117lbft of torque at 3000rpm.
If you feel a little embarassed by a 2 litre that does not produce 130+bhp as they all do today (even diesels!!) you could simply reply in the Rolls
Royce vein and say the power is "sufficient" and then demonstrate it!

surely thogh compared to a modern car with 2L my little herald must be lighter? so the BHP there probably asking about is to the wheels? makes
sence, so my engine im 90BHP then roughly, sounds fair enogh, so if i was to go for the tublar manafold to go with the electronic igniton, will it
make it 100 BHP? not to fussed but saying a figure over 100 sounds better, and proving suficency is no problem tears of the spot nicely, and it
looks nice squezed under the 1200 bonet unlike the old engine which seemed rather to roomy.
oh and there is a garage near me that still sells 5star, but havent bought any, but have leaded head still. use adative and optimax fuel, runns
sweet on it.

If it makes you feel better, tell them it is 100+ BHP, also remind them how old the car is and say that in it's day it was a real flying
machine.
It is always difficult to compare technologies from years ago to todays.
If your car runs well, enjoy it. Certainly don't compare to modern cars, think of the grin factor.
Steve.

You could always get the weight and work out the BHP per ton (tonne for those who have gone metric) this would then let you give a power to
weight ratio which I would think would be more comparable to a modern ?

comparing good, pack next to 99% of modern cars and everyone knows which one looks better. and enjoy it I do, just like to know when i flip
the lid, and they look suprized and I say I put it in, then the questions i have no anwer to...
