Hi all

I work in a small school with about 50 employees all told.

We have, between us, 1x stag, 1x herald, 1x spitfire and 1x moss special on a vitesse chassis (and, shhh... a m*dget)

Has anybody else got a bigger or more varied collection of classics in the workplace? (Classic Motor Trade members don't qualify!)

I'm in an office of seven people and in there there's my Spit and a nice karmann Ghia, the boss owns an old M*B but i've never seen it.

Not currently, but going back to when I owned my first club car a 75 1500 Spit back in 1985 I worked in a drawing office with 50 staff and the following classics were used on a daily basis:-

76 Spitfire 1500 (Mine), 78 Spitfire 1500, 71 Spitfire MKIV, 72 GT6 MKIII, 67 TR4A, 74 Jenson Healey, 73 Beetle Cabriolet.

This raises an interesting question...

There must have been a time when the humble spitfire (or any other triumph) was simply just another sports-car on the market.

Does anyone know at what point did the spit become an *official* classic? I mean, they were still being bought new in 1982, were these people aware they were buying a classic or did that happen some time later.

Andy - when you and your work *chums*

were driving these triumphs in 1986 can you remember if you regarded them as *classics* or just a runaround/older car. I think it'll be difficult to answer without rose tinted specs and of course for the last 20+ years we have definately know these cars as classics.

I'd say we regarded them as classic's back in the mid 80's as when we went along to TSSC meetings any modern car was referred to as a "Eurobox". Maybe it was the fact that the Triumphs had a seperate Chassis which in the 1980s was defintely not the normal modern Monocoque design. My previous car to the Spit was a Dolomite 1850 and although this was the same age as the Spit I definitely did not regard it as a Classic at the time.

Also I remember that my car was eligable for Classic Insurance through Footman James so they must have considered it a Classic.

I guess it's back to the old what is classed as a classic debate which has been discussed on this message board before. For instance I suspect that my Modern Car, a BMW MINI Cooper will in the future be classed as a classic but I would not class it as one yet, I would however class the Rover Mini Cooper as classics right up to the last one to roll off the line in 2000. I guess one point to note is that the new BMW Coopers are eligible to join the Mini Cooper Register so maybe the fact that a car is able to join a classic owners club enough to make it a classic?

I wonder if a new sports car came out with the Triumph name today whether the owener would be eligible to join the TSSC, MGFs are certainly allowed in the MGOC.

Actually, I have a 200% ownership rating here...

...on the basis that I'm the only person who works here and I own two Triumphs
