Hi all, just read Macs article in the May edition of the Courier and thought I would add a few words.
My loft must be very similar to Macs one, however my collection of car related magazines goes back to the late 1950s, the result of having a car mad father
who never threw anything away!
Somewhere in this collection is an article, probably early 1970s, about the application of Velvetex to a car.The area of bodywork to be covered was first
covered in glue and then a low voltage passed through the metal and then the material was sprayed on.The electrical charge made the fibres stand upright in
the glue and the result looked like an Action Mans head[for those of us who can remember realistic hair ones]
Maintainence was simply a quick once over with the Hoover every so often, but what the electric charge would do to modern electronics on todays cars is
another problem.
Did any club members ever have this applied? Did they ever escape the laughter and humilitation?

Good grief! How did I miss that article! When I left school in the late 60's, I worked for a guy who actually ran a business just outside Rugby
applying Velvetex coats to almost anything and everything! It's been a long time but I can remember to this day some of the applications we carried
out. Cars were certainly catered for, in fact the proprietor had his own car (a large estate) done all over, grey and maroon if my memory serves me
correctly! A friend of mine also working there had his Lambretta Li 150 scooter done in the stuff as well! During my short stay there we also had a
contract to do the Action Man hair! That was laborious - painting the epoxy glue on each head by hand and then sticking the head on a "twizzle" stick
and rotating it in the fibre box to ensure even coating of "hair"! I also remember we did a lot of vehicles that were badly rusted on the exterior -
once "velvetexed" - they looked great - couldn't see any more rust! The coating also helped to strengthen the bodywork slightly but really just hid all
the bad stuff underneath it! It was one of my first "post-school" jobs and an experience I'll never forget!
Regards
Chris
