Hi Chris,
While the body number may seem irrelevant to those running more modern club cars, for cars before about 1970 the body number is hugely important.
Check through any parts lists for the earlier Spitfires and all Herald & Vitesse models and you'll see that changes in body trim specification
are usually identified by the body number, NOT commission number. OK, maybe you're not too concerned about which grain pattern you have on your
vinyl seats, but it becomes more of an issue with something like the MK2 Spitfire, where there are major structural changes, to incorporate 2
different patterns of door lock. No woy you can make do with Mk3 type locks on a car that should have the Mk1 type, not unless you fancy fitting
replacement doors and taking a welder to the B-posts!
The body number will be recorded in the original production documents, and will be stated on a BMIHT production trace certificate.
