Jackie,
I have a body tub from CA. In it were several reciepts for the annual safety checks. A fee was paid for this to the DMV in the County were the car
was. This reciept was issued to the cars' registration.
I have absolutely no idea if these bodies will release the info, but seems like a likely place to start.
The DVLA wouldn't know that these cars existed initially, but whoever returned them to the UK would have to provide proof of ownership and USA
registration documents (title) to re-register the car in the UK. Hence your question, Does the DVLC retain any of the original details?
There is a very active triumph scene in the US, perhaps if you contact one of those clubs, they would be better placed to guide you than anyone in
the UK? In fact, didn't Sue Singleton, of this parish, once write an article on a vist to a USA club? Perhaps a connnection to be made there

Jackie,
OK, this is what I know of the American 'system'
Each of the States within the United States are responsible for the cars registered within that State.
Cars must be re-registered each time they are bought/sold, by the new owner, they usually get a new plate and whilst they are waiting for it, they
get a temporary paper label to stick in their rear window, unless it is a convertible, when they do not have to display it, but must carry it in
their glove-box for possible inspection.
You have to pay a licence fee every two years after getting through the INM emissions test, unless your vehicle is over 21/25 years old when it is
exept.
Personalised or Vanity plates are available and you can choose almost any combination of up to 7 letters.
My Vitesse for example, has worn '63 VIT' since July 2002.
The responisble authority here is the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles), which is a Federal Agency. Federal Agencies are not known for their
openness in parting with information, of course, they are very understaffed.
With all the millons of vehicles in the U.S. combined with new numbers being issued at each sale/purchase of a car, it most probably is not
practical to keep all that information for ever. .
If you have an American license plate, then you could try contacting the DMV for that State, on-line, and asking, but I wish you the best of
luck.

Jackie
Don't forget that lots of cars go via California as they are worth more when they get to the UK, so don't bank on it actually being a
California car.
Also....
You haven't mentioned why you needed to know if the DVLA had records.
Cheers

I'm just trying to look up her history, similar to what I'm doing with the Spit (who is a UK car). As other half says, I am being an
