    Im going to stick a Triumph badge over the Rover badge on our Rover 400........that I guess from what you are saying makes it a Triumph.......????

      I'll be honest the Acclaim isn't a pretty car, but although most of it is Japanese it does from part of the Triumph story. Without it the Triumph name would have died a couple of years earlier!
      
      So for me, I'd always allow an Acclaim out at a road junction, but never an MG!!!

        A Triumph is a Triumph is a Triumph - if you don't 'em then don't buy one - each to his own. I personally don't like the Triumph 2000, epsecially in cacky brown, but I certainly wouldn't knock them in any way (oh heck, I bet I get some hate mail now!)

      If BMW slap a Triumph badge on a Z3 than that IS a Triumph, because BMW own the Triumph name.
      
      If you don't want Acclaims to be called Triumphs, then you have to rule out the TRs, 2000s, Spit., Herald, etc as these aren't REAL Triumphs, but Standard cars just using the name.
      
      And if we are calling a Triumph Ugly, have you SEEN a Mayflower?!? Even '80 Volvo designers would call it boxy!

  I think that we got off quite lightly with the Acclaim when you consider some of the dross that the car industry was churning out in the 80's.
  
  Ford have got the Cortina Mk V and the MkIII Escort (which really was bad) to be ashamed of,
  Alfa Romeo put their name to the almightly Arna,
  Austin were busy with the Princess and the Maxi,
  VW put out the Scirocco,
  Fiat were producing cars that had rust problems before they even reached the showrooms (although this wasn't confined to this era)
  And even the BMW's were nothing to shout about.
  
  Despite all this, spare a thought for those brave souls who so valiantly give their allegiance to the Red Octogon - for their marque has been tarnished by association with such automotive lame ducks as the Metro and Maestro!
  
  All in all I think that we should be quite proud of the solid old Acclaim (even if it is a right ugly bu**er).

    OK, it may not have been their greatest work ever, but I owned a Scirocco as a daily driver for a few months, it wasn't all that bad!
    
    It may not have offered the greatest in ride comfort, but it did have a competent enough 'chassis' and engine.

      we have actually got one, my son drives it, (he has a spitfire as well) he calls it the shead, but its totally reliable, does 40 to the gallon and goes through its mot with no hassle, is cheap on insurance for him at 18, dont knock it!

        Me mates Mam used to have one new in 1983 and pick us up from school in it....it was beige with a beige interior, truly vile!!! She sold a Mark 4 Cortina to buy the thing! Please tell me there are none left in this truly vile colour scheme!!!

          We went to look at one back in January, I think it was, beige with beige interior - yuck! Not as yuck as the rust holes though, should never have passed its last MOT... Putting aside the Dysentery Beige ones though, stop knocking Acclaims, you just don't understand and probably never will...

          I wonder...
          
          Just like I wonder WHY anyone ever bought a new car - and someone must have - in such a vile colour? I reckon the dealers should have put all ideas of profit aside and phoned the local asylum without delay..!

                yes acclaim colours are generally hideous especially oporto red its even worse than biege

                  A few years ago I ran an Oporto red Rover SD1 with creamy-biege interior. I thought it looked great!

                    Oporto Red is not worse than beige. Nothing is worse than that awful beige colour, the only good thing about which is it shouldn't be too difficult to spray over, if you could be bothered that is. Actually Oporto Red isn't too bad with a black interior, (Guess how I know?) mind it has been sprayed at some point so maybe it's not nice when faded by 20+ years of British weather?

                      Another good thing about Oporto Red... It's not too far off the colour of old stock cellulose red oxide primer, so long - winded repairs hardly show up at all!

                    But do you STILL think those colours look great? BL and Rover had some lovely exterior colours (I'm visualising that rather nice metallic BRG) let down by some vile interior ones (light tan/beige in particular). Tastes change, and sunlight will have faded some colours even paler, but I'm afraid that however good the rest of the car I really don't think I could live with the beige plastic trim that often went with that BRG exterior!

                      I have to confess that the biege cord and brown plastic were not as classy as the red metallic, which I do still like. I was going to use it on my spitfire until I found out how much spray jobs are, and read the tails of how hard DIY metallic can be.

                        Erm....actually I dont hate Acclaims, I was just really really suprised that so many people leapt to its defence just cos it has a Triumph badge, I really did think (or hope) that they would just dissapear & no one would save them but they keep appearing at classic car events, I just dont see anything classic about them but hey ho! As for being embarrased by one then no not yet, but if I see one in my rear view mirror whilst Im trying to go up a hill in my 1200 Herald then I very well may be!! As for tan, beige, brown, fawn colour schemes Im with you all on that, how on earth any manufacturers thought it looked nice as well as the people who chose to buy them is beyond me.....big fat YUK!! Remember the Beige Maestros with brown interiors...??? Oh dear!!
